Both may speak the same language, but yet can barely understand one another. From chants to stadium etiquette to emotional expression, the football cultures of these two footballing giants are as distinct as a rainy night in Stoke and a sunny afternoon in Munich. And yes, I can in fact do it on a rainy night in Stoke.

Matchday Vibe

In England, attending a game feels like stepping into a loud, pub debate (with a lot of scarves). Fans arrive early, grab a pint, and immediately complain about their manager’s decision. The atmosphere in England leans heavily on tradition:

Singing club anthems, heckling opponents, and collectively groaning when someone skis a shot into Row Z.

Stadiums like those of Anfield or Old Trafford are steeped in history, being important cultural icons of the cities.

On the other hand, the Bundesliga has an energy found only in Germany. It’s organized fan culture that offers choreographed tifos, and coordinated chants, that makes you wonder if everyone spends the weekends together rehearsing. Clubs like Borussia Dortmund turn their stadiums into fortresses any side in Europe fears to play in. The name the “Yellow Wall” isn’t just an expression, but a reality.

(u/suedney, 2024) (this is a 3rd division side by the way! Absolute insanity)

Ticket Pricing

In England, watching top-flight football in person can feel like applying for a mortgage. Premier League tickets are notoriously expensive, with the highest average prices in Europe (BBC Sport, 2026). This has led to a more “touristy” crowd in some stadiums. However, what one spends in price is paid back in quality on the pitch, as the Premier League is the strongest league in the world, with world class players playing for every side.

Germany however is a football socialist utopia. Bundesliga tickets are affordable, thanks to the 50+1 ownership rule, which states that fans must control 50%+1 of the club’s voting rights. This results in fuller stadiums, louder crowds, and a sense that football truly belongs to the people, with Germany having the highest attendance percentage in Europe, with a 96.51% attendance. (Wikipedia contributors, n.d.)

Fan Behavior and Atmosphere

English fans are masters of spontaneity. Chants are witty, sarcastic, and often invented on the spot. One minute you’re singing about your striker’s goal-scoring prowess, the next you’re mocking the opposing goalkeeper’s haircut.

German fans treat chanting like an art form. Songs are longer, more melodic, and sung with impressive coordination. There’s less sarcasm and more solidarity.

English football fans have a reputation for… let’s say dramatic pessimism. Supporting a club often feels like signing up for lifelong emotional turbulence. Even when things are going well, it will all go wrong at any moment. (“We’re winning 2–0? Great, can’t wait to lose 3–2.”)

German fans are more measured as there’s a sense of structure and belief in the system. Clubs are run more sustainably, and that stability translates into a different kind of fan mindset.

Relationship with the Club

In England, clubs have increasingly become global brands, creating distance between clubs and its local communities. While this has brought financial dominance and worldwide recognition, many local fans feel disengaged with their boyhood teams.

Germany on the other hand has largely resisted this shift. Thanks to 50+1, club members are the leading shareholders in the club’s decision making. It’s not perfect, but it fosters a deeper connection which most fans wouldn’t trade the world for.

So which is better?

It depends on your taste! England offers the highest quality of football, while Germany delivers a deep communal experience. In the end, whether you’re belting out chants in a packed English stand or waving a scarf in a sea of yellow in Dortmund, football in both countries is more than a game, but rather an integral part of both country’s culture and community.

BBC Sport.
