Step into a bike lane and you will learn this fact the hard way, at speed, with a bell ringing furiously in your ear. The bike lane is sacred ground and is often painted in red; therefore, treat it like a motorway.

If you want to blend in, rent a bike on day one. It’s the fastest, cheapest, and most Dutch way to get around. Regarding helmet use, it is rare among locals, so you’ll stand out as a tourist, but you’ll arrive with your head intact, which feels like a reasonable trade.

Pro Tip: Look both ways before crossing any path. One moment you’re basking in sunshine; the next, a strong crosswind has arrived with zero warning. As travel experts note, there are really only two things you can count on in the Netherlands: it is very flat and therefore windy, and rain can arrive at any time of year even in July (Weather2Travel, 2025).

The good news is that a proper waterproof jacket doubles as a windbreaker and, in coastal towns, a defence against opportunistic seagulls. It is the single most important item in your bag. Non-negotiable.

Weather Reality Check: Locals will not sympathise if you complain about the rain. They were born in it. They are the rain.

3. Tap In, Tap Out And Don’t You Dare Forget

Dutch public transport is genuinely excellent. Since 2023, you can board trains, trams, metros, and buses using just your contactless credit or debit card no separate ticket needed (MobiDoctor, 2025). You tap in at the gate or yellow-grey pole, travel, then tap out at the other end. Simple, fast, very civilised.

The catch? Forget to tap out and the system assumes you’ve ridden to the furthest destination on the entire network and charges you accordingly (The Geographical Cure, 2025). One distracted tourist moment can cost you a nice dinner. Set a phone alarm that says “TAP OUT” if that’s what it takes.

4. Book Museum Tickets Way, Way in Advance

Photo by Eugenia Pan’kiv on Unsplash. https://unsplash.com/de/fotos/ein-feld-mit-rosa-blumen-FmxTsV7uAPA

Almost every major museum in the Netherlands requires timed entrance tickets booked in advance and they sell out, even in the off-season (The Geographical Cure, 2025). The Van Gogh Museum and the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam are regularly sold out weeks ahead. Therefore, book at least a month before arrival unless you enjoy standing outside staring at a building.

Spring is tulip season and absolutely worth planning your whole trip around. The Keukenhof gardens outside Amsterdam are a jaw-dropping collection of colour, but again, book ahead because the rest of the world has already had this idea.

Amsterdam City Card: The card covers free transport and entry to 70+ attractions, but the Anne Frank House and Van Gogh Museum are excluded and must be booked separately regardless (The Geographical Cure, 2025).

5. Embrace Dutch Directness And the Cheese

The Dutch are famously direct. They will tell you if your idea is bad, your outfit is odd, or you are standing in the bike lane again. This is not rudeness it is a cultural value called directheid, and once you adjust, it’s genuinely refreshing (Rough Guides, 2021). No passive aggression, no guessing games. Just honesty, delivered efficiently.

The Dutch also speak extraordinary English. You can navigate, order, and have full conversations virtually anywhere without a single word of Dutch, making this one of the most visitor-friendly countries in the world (Government of Canada, 2025).

On the food front: the Netherlands isn’t winning global culinary competitions for everyday cooking, but the kaas (cheese) is world-class. Gouda, Edam and aged Beemster grab some at a market and carry it around like a trophy. Stroopwafels and raw herring are also mandatory experiences. The herring requires a leap of faith. Take the leap.

The Netherlands is a small country with a big personality. Flat as a pancake, twice as delicious, and full of people who will happily help you and then politely inform you that you’ve been mispronouncing “Gouda” this entire time. Go. You won’t regret it.

                                                                                                                        Netherlands travel guide

References

Government of Canada.
