My name is Lotta, and today, we are going to dive into my beloved home country, Finland. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, some things about me so you know I’m a certified specialist when it comes to Finnish food and culture. I was born and raised in Helsinki, which is the capital of Finland. My dad is from there and my mom is from Tornio, which is a smaller city in northern Finland. So I know the big city and lapland culture. As you may already guess, the cultures are quite different from each other but today I\u2019m going to tell the similarities and of course, what are the best foods you should try while visiting the country! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
First and foremost, it\u2019s good to know that we have all four seasons and each season has their own cuisines. Finnish people respect nature and usually the food options vary based on what is growing during that time. The more north you go, the more likely the food is local. We like collecting berries and mushrooms from the woods, fishing our own fish and some of us also hunt. In the capital, people like owning or renting summer cottages where they can be closer to nature. So, when you decide to visit, I highly recommend renting a cottage for those who enjoy peace and quiet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
When we look at the food option, there is one vegetable that stays throughout the whole year, a potato. There are different types of course depending on the season, but almost all traditional Finnish foods have potatoes in some form. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In general, Finnish food doesn\u2019t contain a lot of spices and none of them are spicy unless you wish to add some yourself. The recipes are usually pretty simple, but can be time consuming. As the summer is almost behind the corner, I thought it would be a good idea to tell you about my own favorite summer foods. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Since we have thousands of lakes around the country, the most common pair with summer potatoes is fish. We eat a lot of salmon, perch and pike and for me the favorite way to make it is by smoking it in a smokegrill or grill it in an open fire. We also like herring in different kinds of sauces. If you\u2019re craving some light soup, I would recommend trying salmon- or vegetable soup. With soups, we usually eat rye bread( my favourite is Fazer ruis puikula). For desserts, we like using berries and what I would recommend is blueberry pie with vanilla ice cream, berry muffins or pancakes with jam. Different types of cakes are also very common. And of course we can\u2019t forget the drinks! Homemade beer, berry juice and lastly and maybe most importantly, coffee. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
After eating, it is common in households to drink coffee with dessert. In general, if you visit someone, they usually offer coffee and in this situation is it good to remember that Finnish people don\u2019t want to bother others. It is rude to say no, but immediate yes is also not recommended. The best way to reply is \u201c no need to make coffee just for me, but if you were making it anyway, I can drink a cup\u201d. Also bringing some snacks with you like cookies or crackers is polite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
People in Finland may seem quiet and maybe even come across as rude, but once you get to know us, I can guarantee you\u2019re going to have a blast! Finland is also one of the safest countries to travel and the majority of us speak good English. When you go more north I would advise renting a car or getting a tour guy because the distances are long and usually the public transport options are limited. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
